One Day Workshop in Palo Alto

I'll be teaching a one day workshop in Palo Alto on August 4th, sponsored by the Pacific Art League.
We'll be painting at the Baylands, as well as somewhere up in the hills, once I find the best spot to bring a group. Demos, one on one time, as well as some lecture material will make it a busy and fun day. Click here to find out more information and to sign up. Here's a few paintings from this past weekend when I was down there scouting locations, dealing with some of my favorite subjects: reflected light in shadow, atmospheric color, and water. There's plenty to paint in and around Palo Alto!  Hope to see some new faces as well as some familiar ones.

Hi Bill,
You do lovely work. I notice that most of your work keeps a very similar color palette, each piece looks like it uses the same theme. Is this something you're doing intentionally, or out of habit, or a bit of both? Maybe you live somewhere where the weather is very consistent, which keeps the light the same?
Thanks

Thanks for your note. You may find that many artists have a palette that is somewhat common to their work. I'd say there is generally more than one reason, as you surmised, and habit, the nature of the tool, the light of a region or season, all come into play. The three pieces in this post were done on the same day (the bottom two from the same location), so it is not too surprising that they share a range of color.

Beautiful light , mood and atmosphere in each sketch .

Love the palette of colors in your work. I think I would pass that top scene up a thousand times and never think to paint it (it's my favorite of the three). Do you have a post of what tools you use on location?

Hi Bill! Love your work, and these are so nice. Can you believe it? I just took part in a small plein-air event put on by a local gallery, and our works hang thru July--and I did it! What a whirl-wind experiance for an amature like me! But fun. Hope you are having a productive summer, and a great time at Sierra Buttes this year!

Hi John, I did a post a few years back on my field setup, and the link is this:

I have since started using a Heilmann pastel box, but the setup is pretty similar.

Ida! I'm glad you did a plein air show. Congratulations!
Always a lot of work, but fun to be part of a community of artists, I think.

I'd love to come to your Palo Alto event Bill, but unfortunately I'll be at a conference that weekend. I hope you enjoy the day!

Hi Bill, I live in Moraga too. I admire your pastel paintings a lot. unfortunately I will be in Beijing for the whole Aug and can not go to your workshop. I started to paint with pastel two years ago and just enjoy doing it. Hope to know you someday.

These are gorgeous, Bill! I especially love the first painting, which is so evocative of setting and time of day. Your students on August 4 are in for a real treat.
