I don't know any framers in the city. In the east bay, I've used the Framer's workshop and Tim Holton's Framing studio. For framing a large body of work for my shows in the last few years, I've ordered frames from Randy Higbee down in Southern California.

Any professional framer should be able to deal with an un-fixed pastel, but there are a few things you might want to do to make it easier for them. First, make sure you supply the artwork in a manner that is safe from accidental destruction. Make sure it is covered with glassine, and taped to a sturdy board, for example. Also, if you are framing it like a painting, without a matte, you may have to trim the image very close to the visible image area to fit into the rabbet of the frame. That is something that you might prefer to do yourself. It really depends.

It is simpler in some ways to frame pastels with a matte, as you don't have trim the work so accurately, and odd-sized work can be matted to fit into a standard frame size.

Pastels, whether fixed or un-fixed, also need to be framed under glass, as all works on paper should be. The glass should at least be UV resistant, and I do recommend some anti-reflection coatings, especially if the work contains a lot of dark values. I do use museum glass on all my framed work, as it is UV resistant, and eliminates reflections quite well. Anti-reflective glass is not cheap, but you can buy it in bulk amounts to cut down the price. Hope this helps. -BillBill Conehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00852367461802236749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413012723295691207.post-57498860318202766722016-08-27T18:40:54.114-07:002016-08-27T18:40:54.114-07:00Do you have any framers to recommend in San Franci...Do you have any framers to recommend in San Francisco, or advice for framing pastel work? I stopped by two places recently and they seemed a bit reluctant to deal with unfixed pastel paintings like mine. Thanks in advance! I'd been following this blog for a while, but meeting a coworker of yours at a workshop the other weekend reminded me how beautiful your work was!janicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04988598464136587772noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4413012723295691207.post-62602987867575527712015-06-16T07:54:10.157-07:002015-06-16T07:54:10.157-07:00Thank you both, Carolyn and Ida.
